Files not showing up after upload

Description
When I try to upload a file, a node is created, but the file is not visible. Also, the interface shows a node (small "i" icon next to another square icon). The "i" icon links to the created node, which is empty (no file). The square icon links to the root of my drupal site. Since I'm not sure of what a working install looks like, I'm not sure what is wrong.
