"Link does not respond" - how to disable link checking?

Can I disable the checking of links? Every link I enter gives either "Link does not respond" or "Unable to validate link". I don't care about validating links because I trust everyone using this site - it's an intranet site, not external.

Sorry - this is on Drupal 6.x.
