Many news organizations use ITPC metadata for cataloging their images. It's a well-accepted standard, and like the EXIF data, it's carried around with the image itself.
Picasa and iPhoto both use ITPC Caption and Description fields with their images. For a news organization handling hundreds of images, it would be extremely helpful to be able to import captions and photo credits as part of the regular image import workflow.

halftone commentedhttp://drupal.org/project/iptc might be of interest. Probably though, if you intend a heavy-duty photolibrary type of use, you'd be better off using Menalto Gallery2 http://gallery.menalto.com/ embedded in Drupal via the Gallery module http://drupal.org/project/gallery
I use both : Image for folios/exhibits where display and taxonomy are useful, and Gallery2 for libraries of commissioned work for clients (about 9,000 pics so far, all private and restricted to the client). Gallery2 handles IPTC, online ordering and just about anything a pro photographer might need, and will scale to hundreds of thousands of images, as they're stored in a directory tree. Image will have problems as the number of files in the files/images dir increases past a couple thousand.

daniel wentsch commentedAs long as youre not using anything more recent than Drupal 5.x you might want to have a look at MAQUM. Great module, that does not only create Title and Description based upon IPTC data but also allows you to create taxonomy terms for any kind of IPTC tag. It needs exiftool and thus a Perl interpreter >5), which shouldn't be much of a problem in most hosting environments.
