Community & Support

Seeking suggestions on a hosting company that offers more server resources than 1and1. Any suggestions?

I have a problem with running Drupal sites using 1and1 hosting. Well actually, 1and1 has been pretty good for me for hosting 'smaller' and 'less dynamic' pages. Eeven though I upgraded to 1and1's "Premier" account last year. I am starting to have problems with their hosting for my Drupal sites as my Drupal sites start to expand and grow larger. I am posting this looking for suggestions of hosts which do not encounter any of the following problems.

Here are the problems that I currently have with 1and1:

A) Using Drupal, if I have a lot of modules installed, when I try to access Admin / Modules, I get a *500 Error: Internal Server Error*. If I have a lot of menu items, when I try to access Admin / Menu, I get a *500 Error: Internal Server Error*. If I have a lot of modules installed, when I try to access Admin / Access, I get a *500 Error: Internal Server Error*. When I try to use the Simple News module I get *500 Error: Internal Server Error*.

B) Even with my "Premier" 1and1 virtual hosting account. They only offer a total of THREE MySQL databases. Each database only has a limit of 100MBs :(.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to using hosting providers. Honestly, 1and1 is the only host that I have ever used. I started with them about 2 years ago when they offered their "three years free hosting promotion". However, over the last 2 years I have grown considerably in terms of my experience with working as a web site administrator and developer.

I have read other threads in this forum which offer suggestions on "Drupal-friendly" hosting companies. However, I'm not looking for a hosting company that specifically will not experience any of the problems listed above.

Cheers,
Shaun :)

The best place ..

.. to find info on quality and pricing comparisons is on http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ .
There is no other website even comparable to the information and expertise you will find there regarding any kind of hosting.

A good solution for unlimited number of domains, and ssh root access is a VPS account. Xen is the best techology, while Virtuozzo is the easiest if you have little Linux experience.

If you have no experience in configuring the Linux operating system, a shared hosting plan is what still will suit your needs. There are a lot of hosting companies offering 20 domains, unlimited number of MySQL databases, 3-4 GB of space and around 50-200 GB transfer monthly for around US$ 5-10 per month.

If you can, go for the DirectAdmin control panel, or a good cpanel . Plesk is seriously bloated and slows down the servers.

One example of such an offer is http://www.imhosted.com/hosting_plans.shtml .
Happy hunting for a new hosting server.

1and1

I use 1and1 too. For the last 4 weeks when I click the menu key I get a Server 500 Error as well. Called CS, describe the problem, received a form letter the next day about scripting errors. Really did not know how to argue about that.

I view the current Drupal topics and do dedicated searches very often and this is the first post in a while at Drupal, but some months back the issue appears in Drupal and in 1and1's forums. The issue seems to have been resolved at that time on 1and1's end without them admitting to it. Just went away.

I also installed XAMPP, copied my database(s), files, runs great.

Now I am getting the same error on a manuel cron.php . That disturbed me.

Called 1and1 again, stated my testing and forum references, still no menu key. We are about 4 weeks into this. Also sent a detailed e-mail.

Bluehost seems to offer a lot. But like you, not really sure what the best options are. There are several topics in the Drupal forums that where helpful regarding different host.

My site seems to running a bit, noticeably but not threateningly, slower as well. Started about the same time period.

Just an FYI

PHP memory_limit

Some of the errors (at least the ones with which I am familiar) are due to the memory_limit directive in php.ini. You can (try) to petition them to increase this.

If you know system administration, you can get something called a "virtual dedicated server." This will let you install your own OS, and own copies of whatever software that you are free to customize to your wish. You may not want to deal with having to update and track security updates: there are "managed" virtual dedicated servers, one of which I will recommend is Linode (no personal affiliation).

As for shared web hosts, I can't make any recommendations, as I've been running my own servers for 4 or 5 yrs. Please don't mind me shamelessly plugging my own "Drupal friendly" hosting services.

reset the memory limit manually..

with my hosting provider I have an environment which defaults to a 10M PHP memory_limit. Gallery2 requires 16M - without it you get a nice blank page.

I have solved this in two ways -

  • .htacces
    php_value memory_limit 16M
  • settings.php
    ini_set("memory_limit", "16M");

Afterwards, Gallery2 worked perfectly and the integration with the gallery.module also worked perfectly.

memory_limit isn't PHP_INI_SYSTEM

Hrm, I was under the impression that memory_limit was PHP_INI_SYSTEM configuration, and could only be set in httpd.conf and php.ini.

And apparently it isn't: php.ini directives. It's PHP_INI_ALL, and thus can be set anywhere (including at runtime in the script of interest). Try one of the suggestions to increase the memory limit and see if this fixes all/most of your problems.

A small orange

Try www.asmallorange.com offers inexpensive unix hosting plans that offer unlimited websites and mySQL and very friendly support. Give them a try.

dreamhost

You may check DreamHost. I'm for 3 years with them and happy a lot.

I have about 10 Drupal installations on one account there and everything working just fine. Plus there are unlimited databases.

creativebits.org are on

creativebits.org are on Dreamhosts, they've quite a few problems of late, though Ivan (of CB) has listed a discount code people might be interested in:

I've had a virtual host with designer servers for the past few years www.dsvr.co.uk who's support I have found to be very good (they go into allot of depth when explaining problems). They have rather fallen behind recently in terms of the amount of space they offer etc. but they are in the middle of a big move to a new data centre which includes a upgrade of kit, so we're waiting on space increase in the very near future... They also offer a free virtual server so you can try out their service & host 5 domains etc.

For designers ...

.. mediatemple.com are probably well known ?
They host Group94 and others.

Site5

We've had this discussion a number of times on the Civicspace mailing lists.

Dreamhost is very cheap but slow (I moved away and my site sped up immensely, mostly due to sql increases), and has php issues, due to php not having some otherwise standard modules, for mail functions.

I use and recommend Site5.com to people, and so far, those who switched and run Drupal based sites have been happy. They are currently offering deals like 'Use Firefox, get a month free' and 'pay $50 toward your old hosting contract'

(I donate 20% of the referral proceeds I get from the above link to liberty/freedom promoting causes, and the rest goes toward the hosting costs of my own sites)

Want the best?

if you want the best, and have the funding, I can recommend RackSpace for brilliant tech support and hosting.

www.rackspace.co.uk or www.rackspace.com

They are a little more pricey per month mind.

All Business provider

What may help in your situation is to find a company like mine which is small and flexible and only hosts business sites. We are into helping businesses succeed using Drupal as one solution. if you are interested please email me at
john(at)ridgeworksinc.com and let me know what you need.

Thanks.

Check this one...

We use and recommend Micfo.com

One of the things I like best about them is that before I signed up I called at three am just to see if the tech department would really answer. They did. If you can't get tech support on the phone, they respond to email within twenty minutes. I think they have a pretty good "bang to buck" ratio.

They are a CPanel/Fantastico host. Of course you'll want to do a manual install of Drupal since the Fantastico version is old. If you use the CPanel interface (instead of an FTP client) to unpack/install Drupal you'll want to watch for two things--When you edit sites/default/settings.php, the CPanel file editor will put in extra spaces or empty lines at the end, causing an error. Remove 'em and you're golden. The other thing if you use CPanel to unpack on the server and install (as opposed top unpacking on your own machine and uploading)is that you'll have to open Drupal's .htaccess file and copy the text into the existing .htaccess file, because CPanel won't overwrite files when moving--only when uploading. But even a newbie like me was able to get it up and going, so you'd be fine.
