Auto taxonomy based on node age

It would be great to be able to classify content based on its age. This could be done by assigning a validity time for a taxonomy term. A term could be chosen when the node is created (it could be any term in the chain) and the node will be updated to the next taxonomy term after a specific amount of time.

One example is a shop:
The node is created and assigned a taxonomy of "New"
After one month, the taxonomy of the product gets updated to "Normal"
After one year, the product could be updated to "Old" or "Archive"

So, a taxonomy term would have a validity period and a next taxonomy.

This could be integrated into the Node expire module. This functionality could be emulated using views and author date filters but setting the author date would be inconvenient.
