"Read more" and "comments()" links not displaying in teaser

I've spent hours looking for where I broke Drupal. While modifying my theme and some settings in various modules, the "read more" and "comments" links usually displayed at the bottom of teasers stopped showing up. (I'm not sure exactly when it broke over the past two days -- I know that's not much help) Now all I get is a list of taxonomy terms.

I've done a diff on the db and also changed my theme back to garland, in case my custom theme was causing the problem. No luck.

I'm asking if anyone has a clue where I should look to fix the problem?
