On the event volunteer admin page, I receive the error message "You need to assign a CiviCRM profile field for volunteer data collection" even though I have already done so.

The CiviCRM version if volunteer and massmailer is the cvs version. Yeah, it is a bit confusing.

Are you sure you are not confusign the message about a CiviCRM Profile with the one about a CiviCRM Group? You need both.
