Some of those tiny images in sets and skins are 25-30KB. Here is a bit modified module version that I use: optimized images, markItUp! 1.1.3, modified (now working! :) default set and simple skin. Thanks to image optimization (each 300-600B now) this version is more than 2 times smaller than that on the project page (120kB vs 275kB, using same sets, skins and code).

The images come with the mIU JS package, which won't be part of the Drupal module anymore. You should tell the markItUp folks about their unoptimized images, though.
