Making publically available server gneerated images?

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I'm generating server side images and I want to make them publically available http://mysite.org/files/theimage.jpg . So they're not being uploaded or attached to a node. I simple want to register the server side generated files with drupal, so that they can be served from the correct URL.

I have looked at http://drupal.org/project/fileserver module but I'm hoping that there might be a simpler way of achieving my goals. Have checked http://api.drupal.org/api/group/file/5 but a little unsure on how to use it. I can probably hack my way round it, but is there a 'drupal way' of achieving this it?
