required default value when editing widget

Description
When you go back to edit the addnode widget, after having already created the field, there's a new "default value" fieldset showing the widget as it would appear on the node-creation form. I *have* to select a default -- if I leave it blank (or click "select" rather than "create a new x") and try to update the widget, it says "title is required". Attached is image to show what I mean.

something similar happens when trying to edit a node with an addnode field.
I create the node, create a referenced-node inline using addnode, click submit. When I go back to that node by clicking 'edit', make modifications, and click 'submit' -- then i get the 'required title' issue again. The weird thing is that the previously-created referenced node is selected in the 'select' box by default while editing the node, but when I click submit it acts as though I was attempting to create a new referenced node, requiring that the form-fields be filled.
I'll attach another screen if this doesn't make sense.
