are there plans to continue this in light of activity's resurrection? i've got the activity module running on d6 and it works well (though not holding all activity, but suppose that will be fixed shortly or soon)...i'm just not really sure exactly how this differs, or what would be required to make it do what activity does out of the box (so to speak)

mercmobily commentedHi,
This module is here to stay. The main reason is that an important module like this needs a steady maintainer, a well kept queue, and needs to integrate well with the rest of Drupal.
I am just about to finish FriendList. Once that's done, Marius and I will complete this important module as well (especially in terms of adding some default actions, for example, so that people don't get lost).
I personally wouldn't use Activity (which is why I wrote this glue module). A bit of activity now -- coincidentally when another activity module is about to create considerable following -- doesn't cut it. But that's my personal opinion. Feel free. This is free software after all.
Bye,
Merc.

mariusooms commentedI think the approaches are different. Activity, friends, user relationships (and potentially others) pursue to harness power on their own without dependency of other modules, whereas activity_log and friendlist are harnessing existing module (popular and well written modules I might add). Both situations have, arguably, strengths and weaknesses.
I've tried to work with modules that try to do everything in its own package, but usually I end up hacking the thing into submission. The power of using other modules, is that they also were created for a specific function. Why not use those functions. In the end, I prefer working with Views, that's why I love flag, friendlist and other modules that harness that power. Same goes for Rules...AND the maintainers don't quite...I've learned the hard way by following modules that are plainly abandoned.
So are activity_log and activity comparable, or other user management modules versus friendlist? Yes, by looking at the features, but no, when looking at the architecture and flexibility. I think there's room for both...those that like modules that just install and that's that...and those that like to do more with the combined power from other modules that are well supported. You can't say...don't exist, when there are other modules out there that offer so much flexibility for module developers. It doesn't make any sense.
Sorry if this reads a bit disorganized, just writing down my thoughts as I read this issue.
Regards,
Marius
