Empty imagefield goes to HTML

Steps to recreate:
Create a content type, with two imagefields, both optional, and without a default picture.
now create a node in this content type, enter only one field

Expected result:
Code: Code for one image
Visual: One image on node view

Actual Result:
Code: Code for two images
Visual: One image on node view, and one red cross in IE (firefox masks this error, but the html is still availble)
