Hi, I am new to Drupal and I need some help

I want to create columns to help fill up the whitespace I have on the sides.
I understand that only some themes can allow that and I have chosen the minnelli theme.
What do I do now?

I suspect he could be meaning sidebars ..., with one on the left & the other on the right, with the main content in the center.
In that case, go to Blocks, create some and locate some left and some on the right ...
Pick some of the available "Disabled" blocks and "Enable" them for test purposes.

Some themes allow creating a third "column" others don't.
