I just set up this site with my vacation time... www.questionforge.com is a Q&A service site, as its name indicates. The site itself might have nothing new but I will make it unique one by adding Q&A plugins to Wordpress, blogger.com and other blog software.
A brief summary on modules used:
CCK for custom fields
views-5.x-1.6
imagefield-5.x-2.1, imagefield for question - this will enable user to ask a question like "what is this?"
signature_forum-5.x-2.3: enable answerers to link the answers to their websites
flag_content-5.x-2.8: for reporting spam
tagadelic-5.x-1.0 for showing tags for question and tag cloud in side bar
notifications-5.x-1.0, mailhandler-5.x-1.4 for subscribing to new question and answers
similar-5.x-2.0, show similar questions for the current question
stringoverrides-5.x-1.6 for changing UI text like "comments" to "questions"
node_dedupe-5.x-1.2 for preventing duplicate submission of form
services-5.x-0.92: enable Drupal to provide web service - web services client to be developed
xmlsitemap-5.x-1.6
google_analytics-5.x-1.6
I will appreciate it greatly if you could have a look at it and suggest what modules I can utilize for a Q&A sites, without too much hacking jobs. Thank you.
Added captcha-5.x-3.1
for reducing spam posts. And,
user_interests-5.x-1.0 for showing the subjects that answers are good at.
why not on d6???
i'm confused, based on what you're doing why not run it all on drupal6?
oh, and a new theme and some clever block placement will make it look much better ;)

i love to waste time: http://twitter.com/passingnotes
I once installed Drupal 6...
However many addons the site requires support only 5.x (while few support 6.x only). Finally I had to remove 6 and insalled 5. We have another site that is based on Drupal 6 since the modules are availlabe for 6: Celeb Stuff.
Thank you for the suggestions. We will improve it by adding some blocks and applying a better or custom theme...
