No need to change the permissions.

Isn't the "error 404" page a Drupal page with some instructions about what to do? If so, either go first to http://musementors.com/user and login as user 1, or follow the instructions in that error page.

The sequence seems to go like this: (since day 1 of both 6.3 and 6.4updates)Anything obvious in this?..I'm a noob, so I'm stuck... thanks!

Have you solved this problem? Same here.
I was thinking if it depends on installation folder. Do you have your drupal in root?
Which folder it was installed public_html or www?

It was browser specific - if you're using OSX try Opera - it's the only browser that allowed me to update. Random!

For me it wouldn't work with Chrome 16.x but worked when I ran update.php from IE9.

Wow! Thanks for the tip. Running update.php in FireFox was giving me the HTTP error 404 message. Switched over to IE and it ran just fine!

It seemed to be a result of "update.php" not being writable by group. Try copying the permissions of "index.php" over "update.php".
