Bounty: PayPal Paid Subscription Module
For Drupal 6.x – a simple module that allows my users to sign up for a paid subscription that instantly is activated (assigning a pre-existing user role) as PayPal charges them a 1 time fee.
How it works:
Module is activated and configuration contains the PayPal gateway. The number of Subscription Blocks is specified.
Each Membership Subscription Block is assigned a location and configuration allows for:
• Background color of block
• Description of subscription (would be nice to connect the supported editor, but optional)
• Sold out message – displayed when the number of subscriptions left becomes 0
• Number of remaining subscriptions to be sold (decreased by 1 for every paid subscription) this displays at the bottom of the block “nnn memberships available at ($Cost of membership)”
• Cost of membership – in a form to be sent to PayPal
• Description of membership – in a form to be sent to PayPal
• Membership number sent to PayPal for reference somehow (Total number of memberships sold)
• What page to display or not display would be nice but not mandatory
• Message displayed to user at top of page after PayPal returns
After PayPal returns:
• User role to be activated selected from a list of all roles (minus admin)
• Number of remaining subscriptions is decreased by 1
• Subscription total is increased by this subscription just sold
• eMail address to send a recap of subscription for auditing purposes (PayPal description, PayPal membership cost, user id, membership number, total sales) (If sold out an additional eMail sent with subject “PayPal description - Sold out”)
• Admin user sees the total number of memberships sold plus total sales
• Display message to user after PayPal returns shows at top of page
If the user already has the user level in the subscription block the block is not displayed – can’t sign up for a duplicate subscription.
I need this immediately. If there is something simpler or faster to implement I’m open to suggestions.
Thanks,
Perry

I have a solution, but....
http://www.westernstudios.net/subscription-install-drupal.html has something that I'm probably going to wind up buying.
Just wanted to see if anyone out here has something close to a simple version that I'd like.
Thanks for any input...
Another Alternative
If you don't want to shell out $70 for a 1 year subscription to Western Studios' solution, which is really only a bridged version of their software, then check out this drupal module which has the same features for only $24.95: http://www.moneyscripts.net/drupal-paypal-subscriptions . It has Screenshots so you can get a good idea if it would work for you.

As mentioned in the other threads, please clarify your commercial interest in a product when posting-- you are the seller of the module you are recommending, not a user providing assistance.
My apologies
I would edit my post if I could, but to clarify, I am the creator of the module which I linked above, and also support and update my work on a regular basis. Please let me know if anyone has any questions regarding it, and I would be glad to answer them! :)
With a paid subscription comes....
I thought I read about a Drupal module that somehow kept track of when a paid subscription member (or any user) published his user ID and password so hundreds of others could use the account too.
But I can't find that module - if it even existed.
Any thoughts of how to prevent publishing user ID and password to bypass subscription costs?
The other problem is ID theft - someone gets another user's ID and PW and starts to impersonate the user.
Thanks
=-=
There is no module that does the above that I've ever seen or read about.
The only thing I can think to do in a case like this is find a module that exposes IP addresses. Though even this method won't be 100% secure because not every ISP uses static IP addresses. Some use dynamic IP's which means that every time a user logs into their ISP they are handed a new IP address. It will however, give you some idea. Obviously is User A is logging in from two or more far away places within a small window of time you've got a problem.
IP addresses that change a lot
Thanks,
I might have to pay someone to develop a Drupal 6.+ module to keep track of user IP addresses and if it sees more than 10 different IP addresses in a day to do something (not sure what).
It did occur to me that someone riding in a car/train using Sprint or another wireless provider might get new IPs every few minutes and this would have to taken into account.
Same with cell phone browsers - I use my cell phone browser many times during the day and log into my sites.
(Now that I think about it, TikiWiki has this module I believe)
=-=
I'd start by checking the available drupal 6 modules that involve ip addresses and file a feature request if you find one you think it would fit into
ip authenticator may be a good place to start. D5 has a few too that haven't been ported to D6 and maybe a bouty offered would entice the maintainer to port sooner.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Have you found a solution for this yet?
Western Studios
I've been working with a guy at Western Studios and he is a day or so away from releasing their module that works with Drupal 6.5.
Their module is very nice and will do the job for me. The alternative is $1,000+ in programming fees.
Any Luck Yet?
Just wondering if Western Studios has it ready yet? thx
Posting module to the community
Strange that they're charging for GPL code, but to each their own :) If someone has purchased this module, please post it to the community so that others can benefit from this useful code.

Interesting point
What is the difference between selling Drupal modules vs Drupal themes? (Genuinely wondering.)
No difference
No difference really. Both wind up licensed under the GPL so, once some one has a one they are free to distribute it any way they like if they wish to.
GPL of themes and modules
Yep, all of modules and the template code from themes is GPL and freely redistributable. The only thing we copyright in our themes is the graphic design and CSS.
There's nothing stopping anyone from selling a module, just strikes me as a little odd since anyone who buys it can freely publish it. But I guess people are buying... :)

I'm up and running...almost
I've worked with the author and the Subscription V3 does work with Drupal 6.6 - most of it.
There are a few places that have a little problem but I believe the author wants to fix it and make some money.
So I'm modifying my large web site and organizing it around paid subscriptions.
Wish me luck....
Other options?
thx for the update- are there other v6.x modules available to work with PayPal's subscription functions? It's not a have-to-have but I'd ideally like something with an affiliate program that can be associated with the subscription tracking to reward webmasters and registered users for sending in referrals.
Also, perhaps tie in a user reward points system that could be redeemed for subscription extensions- anything like that exist out there I wonder? For instance, users would gain x number of points for issuing invites for new users even if the incoming visitor just registers for a "silver, non-paid registration" versus 2x more points and/or affiliate commission for "gold, paid subscribers".
Ubercart?
I havent tried it yet, but I think ubercart does subscriptions pretty good, you might want to look there.

FYI: trying to build such module
Michel dG
I am building such a module as I decide to buid a site on top of Drupal 6 !! So I did use pgapi and modify and upgrade Ogone paiement processing module. I did also create a new module for user subscription with payment, renew of subscription and mail notifications
As this is my first modules, it take me some time.
How is this working out for
How is this working out for you? I'm trying to implement a PayPal subscriptions module for my alumni site and would like any recommendations (good or bad) you can provide.

Per the comments above, I'd really recommend looking at the Ubercart subscriptions module and Ubercart recurring fees module. Both are a little rough around the edges, but have a lot of promise.
I have used these modules extensively and I understand their strengths and weaknesses. I have also spent a lot of time talking directly with Ubercart leadership, providing them with some improvement suggestions.
If anyone needs any advice or help in regards to subscription processing using tools such as Ubercart, send me a message.
Exactly. Just use ubercart
Exactly. Just use ubercart and the subscriptions/role module. Paypal as well as a host of others are supported gateways.
Set aside 2 hours before beginning and read the entire documentation, it will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Drupal 6?
What about for drupal 6?

went with ubercart
after sandboxing lm_paypal, ws subscribe, and ubercart with drupal 6 we have gone with ubercart. There really is no comparison. ubercart seems overwhelming at first, but is amazing in all respects. We are currently only using the subscription feature of ubercart, but it is nice to have the option to add products and downloads as our site grows.
subscription add on?
Hudson,
When you say your using the 'subscription feature', do you mean the subscription contribution? Are you using paypal?
paid subscription
I should have been more specific. We are using the role assignment feature of UC to manage paid subscriptions to our site (payments through paypal).
Recurring and expired/canceled
Hudson,
Are you doing recurring accounts? I didnt think paypal/ubercart worked with recurring together yet. Do you have problems with accounts that expire or are canceled? Does ubercart revoke the role correctly or do you do that manually?
Thanks
We are not doing recurring as
We are not doing recurring as we were not able to get this working correctly in the sandbox, so we are sending out reminders for people to renew. So far expiration appears to be working correctly. I do not have any experience with canceled yet, but will do some tests with it this weekend. There is an error if a user checks out with multiple purchases of multiple roles, ubercart will assign the ubercart roles correctly, but only 1 role will actually get assigned. We have to manually assign the additional role(s).
