Connect failed to: com.whois-servers.net

Description

I have installed whois as also phpwhois and given permission.

However I am trying to search anything I am getting Connect failed to: com.whois-servers.net or Connect failed to: net.whois-servers.net depending on if I am searching .com or .net url.

Any idea what I have done wrongly.

The error means that php is unable to access those website. Are you trying to use the module while the internet is off or anything such?

I wonder what it could be. Are your php scripts allowed to make connections with other websites(I wonder if there's a setting for this in php.ini)?

Everything works fine on my local machine.

I have this module installed on my live site and it does not work:

whois Connect failed to: com.whois-servers.net

Please confirm that your webserver is capable of making outbound connections on port 43 ( the whois port).

You can test this e.g. on a shell with:
telnet com.whois-servers.net 43

Also please confirm if it only happens with .com domains or if other tld's are affected.
