phone numbers not saved

reasonable inputs of phone and fax numbers are not saved properly. for example:

+61 3 9598 1122 = 61

basically it seems like nothing is liked except for numbers, but obviously we include lots of other characters: +, (, ), -, etc. in phone numbers
