I need to use some combination of AutoCategorise, http://drupal.org/project/opencalais and possibly the http://drupal.org/project/memetracker modules.

Please could someone with a better understanding of AutoCategorise and OpenCalais give a brief explanation of the differences between them and any pros and cons you can see.

Can they be used together?

This uses a different approach to open calais. It is simpler and more self-contained, and you define the categories yourself, probably for a more limited field.
