appointment manager?

I am a php developer, but new to Drupal and need some input from the pro's. How would one go about setting up Drupal as an appointment manager as you would need for a family doctor or physiotherapist. I have been reading a lot in the forums and module section for Drupal where I came across Event Manager module (http://drupal.org/project/event_manager). Would this be a good starting point or am I missing something that might have been developed already?

CCK + event OR calandar modules
Perhaps a better way to go is with the event module plus CCK. Another option is CCK with the calendar module. You'll probably want to install and experiment with both to determine which combination best suits your needs. Either way you'll also want to include the views module.
You could also create a handful of custom modules to handle the appointment creation and management, but even with PHP experience Drupal's learning curve is long so you might be better off in the beginning going with the above.
Good luck!

CCK + event OR calendar modules
Thanks for your advice. It looks like there is nothing ready made out there so I will be trying to put something together from existing modules I guess.
I haven't tried it yet, but
I haven't tried it yet, but the http://drupal.org/project/bookings module may also be of use.

bookings module
IMO, I'd avoid the bookings module because according to the description "This is still very much in early development and its not ready for testing;"

bookings module/api
Yes, I came across both already. But hey are both Drupal 6 only. Would it be smart to put up this new website in Drupal 6 or in Drupal 5? Any suggestions...?
the decision to use 5 or 6
the decision to use 5 or 6 is really just a function of whether or not the modules you need are available in d6. if they are by all means use d6.

I tried...
I tried to pull this off using these modules: event, event repeat, availability and CCK. But didn't really fit to my needs, mostly because of the granularity of the appointment. The closer i found was OpenResort module but couldn't use it because i would've ended up throwing Ubercart away.
