I have found a script which claims to convert CSS style inline; which would be great for webmails such as gmail and hotmail:
http://www.pelagodesign.com/sidecar/emogrifier/

Could this be added to simplenews template?
Should this be added to simplenews?
Should this be inside a new mail module?

I don't know were it would go, but I think it would be great to have this.

Please add some more info about what this thing does, why you need it for Simplenews, and why the existing features are not sufficient.

Interesting idea. The default theme puts the style in the <body> element to avoid problems with most e-mail clients. But it doesn't help GMail. I can confirm that moving the styles into each element, which is what emogrifier does, solve this problem. I will therefore include support for emogrifier in a coming version of Simplenews Template.

I have added support for Emogrifier to HEAD.
