I installed drupal 6.4 on a local machine (running linux) and set up an smtp/imap connection from the local machine to an email server. I can send an email from the local machine using Evolution (a mail application like MS Outlook).
However, emails in drupal does not seem to work. I cannot have users notified once an account is created or a user cannot create an account of his/her own since he/she does not get an email notification.
Is it something that has to do with the configuration in drupal or something that has to be done on the main email system?

Does your email system allow relay from your localhost? What does your SMTP server logs say?

I have Drupal 6 sending emails with a default install.
