I found a lot tutorials for Drupal 5 and panels, but not for Drupal 6. Any recommendations?

I could assign nodes to columns, but probably I didn't enter a correct path.

I am sorry to say that but the book you are suggesting is inadequate and outdated... Building a custom user profile as indicated in the book is not possible with the new release of panels, views drupal 6.14 and even if you use tricks to build it as indicated, you end up with a mess! The custom profile page takes over any other page (forum, blog etc) and everything gets displayed in the pane where user details are shown when you view a user's profile.

This girl that wrote the book didn't bother to revise it and make it work with the new releases...Don't waste your time on it...you will end up after a while knocking your head against the wall.

The first stable release for panels 3 only came out three months ago. I didn't want to update everything with the continuing changes is UI going on. Hang in there... I might still do it.

The panel will only display take over the profile page when you add a Variant for profile.
