Addison Berry new Drupal documentation team lead

Dries - October 10, 2008 - 18:02

For the past few years the Drupal Documentation Team has been led by Steven Peck (sepeck). Steven was the second person to take on this role (Charlie Lowe was the first), and he has done a great job. Not only has he grown the documentation team to include a lot of talented and hard-working volunteer writers, he has overseen the restructuring and reorganization of Drupal.org's documentation handbooks, greatly improving their structure and accessibility. Thank you Steven for the great work!

Like so many Drupal contributors, Steven works on Drupal completely as a volunteer. His day job has been demanding a lot of time lately, and he has decided to step down from being the Documentation Team Leader. That means it is time to pass the torch to the next person who can then sprint with it for a while.

One great thing about the Drupal community is seeing people grow into new roles and take more responsibility upon themselves. This is certainly the case for Addison Berry (add1sun), who in her two years working with Drupal has become involved with virtually every aspect of the Drupal project. Lately Addi has been more and more active with the documentation team, making her a clear choice in my mind to carry on where Steven left off. I'm therefore very happy to announce that Addison Berry, aka add1sun, is the new documentation team leader, effective immediately.

The documentation team leader has the following responsibilities:

  • Getting the community involved in documenting Drupal
  • Building and coordinating a team of volunteers who have the tools and authorization to make meaningful changes
  • Developing tools for document creation
  • Overseeing the structure and content of Drupal's documentation

Addi is well equipped to handle this role. Her special skills include:

  • A talent for fostering involvement
  • Drupal programming foo that will help with tool selection and building
  • Constant exposure to the needs of people learning Drupal through consulting and training with Lullabot
  • Diplomatic leadership skills

Addi knows that it is her time to sprint with the torch. As with any leadership position within the Drupal project, the time will come to pass that torch on to the next rising star. Until then, I think we can expect great things from the documentation team. Big thanks to both Steven and Addi for your focus on Drupal documentation!

Big thanks to steven and everyone who has contributed to drupal docs so far.
Keep up the good work.

Congrats!

Michelle - October 10, 2008 - 19:02

I've noticed you really taking a lead in the documentation and it's nice to see that recognized. I know Steven did a lot of work to get the handbooks into shape but he's been so very busy lately it will be nice to have the pressure off him.

Congratulations add1sun! I first met you at the codesprint in Szeged and i have to say that i was a lot under the impression on how you can lead everyone with such charisma.
I'm sure we are in very good hands.

Thank you both

pwolanin - October 10, 2008 - 19:36

Any Drupal leadership positions is lots of work and not much glory, so thank you both for your past and future contributions.

I have been less active on the documentation team recently, but I've always appreciated Steven's dedication to making the docs organized, useful, and as accurate as possible, and I look forward to contributing under Addi's watch.

Welcome Addison. And thank

Welcome Addison.

And thank you for your great service Steven.

Breaking the Mold

mbutcher - October 10, 2008 - 20:09

Congrats, Addi!

It's a traditional complaint with Open Source software that documentation is "an afterthought or worse".

Drupal has long been ahead of the Open Source curve on that one. But there's always room for improvement, and there are some major changes ahead that will benefit from strong leadership on the docs team. Having listened to her present in Szeged, I am excited to see what she can do here. And I'm glad to know that she's stepping up to the plate in time for both the redesign and Drupal 7!

:)

dvessel - October 10, 2008 - 20:16

This is such a thankless job that I have tremendous respect for Steven and now Addison for filling this role. It's a perfect fit and I'm sure the docs will continue improving. Congratulations Addison! I promise to follow through and help out when I say I will. :p

Thanks Steven for continually improving the second most important component of Drupal: code without documentation is near useless.

Addison, congratulations for taking on that rules, and I am sure you will improve it more ...

Thanks Steven for your great work on the docs and the docs team. It has been a great ride! What you will leave behind is surely an excellent and solid foundation for the one next in line.

With Addi leading the team, there's really no other direction than going towards excellent Drupal documentation. Looking forward to another great ride with a new driver.Congratulations Addi!

heather - October 12, 2008 - 17:23

i just wanted to pipe in too.

thanks of course to steven and everyone who works on documentation.

for me, i didn't get involved until the documentation sprint at szeged. i think i really understood (finally) that even in my newbishness, i could make valued contributions. i also liked having a relatively simple task where the chances of screwing up were slim (we were reclassifying hundreds of posts). since then i've been helping out a bit each week, keeping my eye on the docs issue queue and adding help where i can.

i hope add1sun gets more funding for more documentation sprints. i think it would have a huge positive effect. its amazing what gets done without the face to face activity, but i know that sprints will mean the docs are even better.

Drupal has no roadmap, maybe Addi has one?

drupal-id.com - October 13, 2008 - 02:26

Addi is well equipped to handle this role. Her special skills include:

* A talent for fostering involvement
* Drupal programming foo that will help with tool selection and building
* Constant exposure to the needs of people learning Drupal through consulting and training with Lullabot
* Diplomatic leadership skills

So long Drupal has no roadmap, and I hope Addi will show us a roadmap even for the Documentation section only. Will Addi can equipped Documentation team with a roadmap? Anyway, congratulation Addi!

no roadmap

add1sun - October 14, 2008 - 16:49

Just like the Drupal code, documentation is an all-volunteer effort. People will work on what they can and want to as they have time, so roadmaps don't tend to work very well. I have posted on my personal blog with my thoughts about Drupal documentation and I did list a few personal goals that are important to me, but they may not be important to everyone on the team, and that is fine and expected. Everyone has their own itches to scratch.

If you have ideas or goals for docs, please feel free to dig in and let others know. We have a lot of ideas and discussions that happen on the docs mail list and we are beginning to summarize and organize a bit on the new group page.

And thank you. :-)
