Why not a simple views slideshow with jQuery update installed? See http://www.971rqq.com/ for an implementation; of course you'll need to expose a pager...

I also need a simple jquery post slide show for Drupal 5 without the need of Views. Whatever became of this? Is it something you're planning to contribute to the community?
