How to send content by email to users from specific roles

I guess the subject line is explicit.
Is there any module that provides this very basic CMS feature to publish new content toward subscribers?
(not a real-full newsletter publication function such as simplenews)
I know how to notify them about happenings on the site usine embedded actions and contributed Rules module, but no how to send them what is it about.
For example, sending all changes per day for a particular type of content, or triggered at each content / comment add/change

and notify will auto-generate the newsletters/emails for you: http://drupal.org/project/notify
you can also use rules or actions to make things happen with these...

Mass Contact could almost do it
This sounds exactly like a feature request I made for Mass Contact (http://drupal.org/node/305779)
It should be a relatively easy feature/module to add/create, unfortunately I just don't have enough experience with Drupal right now to do it myself. I would be extremely interested to hear about solutions people have found for this.
