On Friday, I inadvertantly extracted the 6.5 update files into my sites/all/modules folder along with an update to the CCK and Views modules. When refreshing the system report page, my Drupal installation convinced itself that I had done the update from 6.4 to 6.5 merely by untarring the update into the modules folder. Unfortunately, as the site was not in maintenance mode and update.php had not been run (in short I had only untarred the tarball), the entire installation fell over. Not quite sure why Drupal picked up the extraction of the files into an incorrect place and adjusted itself accordingly, but I thought I'd better report the behaviour.

I'm not sure how Drupal should be expected to handle this scenario, given the 6.4 and 6.5 files within the same file structure.
