I would love to have one interface through which I can add whatever media I need to add to a node. Sometimes I need to upload media files, and sometimes I need to link to media files hosted elsewhere. I would like to be able to do that through one interface, and perhaps even one cck field and and one set of css tags. It seems like that is the holy grail from the end user's perspective. Does that make sense?

That absolutely makes sense, and that is what the discussion on the future of the asset module is all about, there's no need to double post.
