This might not be related to the advanced forum module or not, but the forums are currently the only place on my site where my $footer variable is empty along with $footer_message. The footer information displays correctly on all other pages.

I can't think of any reason for it. AF doesn't do anything with the page template. Easiest way to check is to disable AF and see if it comes back.

Disabled Advanced Forum...issue still exists.

printing the $vars for each page through the pre_process_page function reveals that it is empty only for the forums page :(.

Strange... I can't think of what would cause that. I can tell you it's not normal behavior of core forum, though, because I have the footer on my site in the forum.
