The Manning Publications Company recently announced two new books about Drupal. Manning is a well known publisher of many high quality technical books and the popular "in Action" series. Their decision to release two books about Drupal highlights the growth of interest in the Drupal platform. Manning's decision to work with established members of the Drupal community and also donate a portion of sales to the Drupal Association shows their desire to be a responsible member of the Drupal world.
The books are scheduled to be published in 2009, but are currently available as part of the Manning Early Access Program (MEAP). MEAP follows the tradition of the Open Source software world to "release early, release often." Early versions of the initial chapters in the book are available now. Readers from the MEAP program are encouraged to discuss the book with the authors in a dedicated forum on the Manning Website. Hello Drupal by Greg Holsclaw
Hello! Drupal is a fun, engaging tutorial that introduces Drupal and shows you how to build Drupal-powered sites quickly and easily. This friendly, fully-illustrated book starts with the absolute basics for the new Drupal user—setting up your computer to use Drupal, building your first pages, creating user accounts, and so forth. By following a series of interesting examples, you'll learn to manage both small and large blocks of content as well as how to add navigational features like tags, menus, catalogs, and search. Part 2 of the book will introduce many of the most popular contributed modules to the Drupal novice, including PathAuto, Views, Panels, Media module and a quick spin through themes as well.
Hello! Drupal is for readers with little or no experience with Drupal. If you've done websites using another technology, this book will help you use what you already know inworked with websites using another technology, this book will help you apply that experience to Drupal. If you're brand new to the web, Hello! Drupal is a great place to start your adventure.
Drupal in Action by Ezra Barnett Gildesgame and Greg Knaddison
Drupal In Action is a comprehensive review of Drupal including coverage of the Core and Contributed modules for Drupal 6, a guide for successful interaction with the Drupal community, and related topics like performance and site migrations. The book is focused around the publishing industry to help provide a framework for the chapters, but the content is still useful and applicable to other types of Drupal websites like social networking, media sites, or generic web applications.
Beyond a review of Drupal core, this book will also cover popular contributed modules like Views, Panels, Imagefield/Imagecache, and Workflow Core and Contributed modules for Drupal 6, integrating those modules to build a successful site, and related topics like website performance and site migrations. The book is focused around the publishing industry to help provide a framework for the chapters, but is still applicable to other types of Drupal websites like social networking, media sites, or generic web applications.
For more information, see the book's MEAP page and feel free to ask questions in the official Drupal in Action Forum.

Good news. Greg, your cover
Good news. Greg, your cover picture hints vaguely at a sultry version of The Milkmaid in my imagination. ; )

some symbolism
Thanks, Ryan!
Yeah, we wanted to make sure the cover had some blue and given the choice between two other figures we went with the female figure in part since Drupal has such an amazingly strong group of women in our community. And there is definitely a mental connection for me with that Vermeer painting which is from a place that is at least not too far from Drupal's "home."
/me makes a note to himself to explain that in the preface...

Hi Greg, Here a dutchman.
Hi Greg,
Here a dutchman. Vermeer has beautiful paintings and the one you have chosen looks absolutely smashing. Drupal has so many nice features (secrets) which hopefully you will unfold in your book.
Looking forward to your book about Drupal 6!
greetings,
Martijn
To Mr. Knaddison
Yo Greg, will your book cover both Drupal Core and contributed modules (e.g., like Views, Panels, Imagefield/Imagecache, and Workflow?)? Also who's it focused at? Is it applicable to anyone else? After reading the first part, I figured I had the answers. And when they were repeated almost verbatim right after, I thought "yeah, I was right". But then they're repeated once more (again, almost verbatim), and so I thought that perhaps it wasn't so afterall and something else is going on behind the scenes? ;)
Also, are you covering Pathauto? :)

Core and Contrib and more
Yes, it is Core and Contrib and even Community and ancillary things like performance and site migrations.
However, we've only got a few chapters to cover contrib and therefore had to make some tough decisions - pathauto is left out.
It is focused on publishing and enterprise sites, but also meant to be useful to just about anyone. The first chapter is meant to do exactly what you say: provide a base level of explanation so that people who know it will think to themselves "yeah, I was right" so I'm glad that was successful.

Missed the point, you did :)
You completely missed my critique, didn't you? :p (But then, I did put on a heavy layer of satire...)
I meant to say that the "Drupal in Action" description is really redundant, to the point of repeating itself quite a few times; check it:
On a second look, it might also just be some copy/pasting that's gone awry...

haha
The co-author process is really interesting. Without a doubt the end result is better (the writing is also more fun) but sometimes we do get a little crossed-up I guess. Thank goodness for editors.
Thanks for noticing our repetition and redundancy ;)

CCK and Views
Hi Greggles,
I would like to ask if the book covers how to extend the contributed modules and how to work together with them using custom modules.
If it does, I'm definitely buying a copy! Thanks.
Nice! More books about

Drupal book for ecommerce
It would be fine as well to find some books and documentation to turn Drupal into an E-commerce content management system similar to Magento. The challenge is not easy, but possible. I am actually writing a book about the Magento ecommerce architecture. It will be available in few months normally.

discussed in a new thread
I just responded in a new thread so I don't want to re-hash too much of it here.
In short, it didn't work out, it was a good learning process, the content (and hopefully more) will still get published as an e-book.
