I want to find the perfect metaphor for Drupal when compared to other CMSes like Joomla, wordpress and EE. One that will make someone understand Drupal right away.... Have fun!

What i had in mind is
Drupal is like Lego blocks (lots of parts, might look ugly at first but becomes impressive when you know how to utilize it)
Joomla is a toy doll (pretty and usable straight away, but you have to buy the dress and stuff)
Wordpress is toy car (pretty great looking and the best at what it does but you can do less with it)

This might be useful for explaining what Drupal means.

underappreciated subject
Drupal.org documentation is about as unfathomable (& exciting) as the manual for my microwave. It needs metaphors - & once decent ones are developed, they need to be made into mini-movies with flash, motion graphics & stuff. Cos bombarding ordinary people with technical jargon just makes their eyes glaze over.
But metaphors for Drupal??? How about metaphors for "Content Management Systems in general" (albeit with a Drupal slant) - isn't this whats really needed?
Anyway, here are some suggestions...
1. Drupal is a sea of information
2. to access the sea, you go to a public beach (as an anonymous user) or go to your own beach once you've become a member
3. Views are like plasma TV screens on the beach - they can pretty much show you a view of anything in the sea
whats in the sea???
4. ships - could these be modules. they can be of different sizes. & derelict
5. islands. showcase drupal sites???
6. currents. new lines of thinking which wreck ships, or take them to new places
7. rafts - organic groups???
8. creatures. eg: very active members of drupal.org, perhaps mermaid- or octopus-like, with tails/tentacles that link to all kinds of things
