DrupalCon Is Coming to Washington, DC March 4-7, 2009: Only $125 for First 100 Developers

DrupalCon is THE conference for Drupal developers, and it's coming to Washington, DC, March 4 – 7, 2009! For those new to the DrupalCons, this is a huge unconference for developers. It's a time for us to get together, learn from each other, trade ideas, make decisions, and build a stronger community.

There will be a special early bird rate of $125 per ticket for the first 100 people who register. Tickets won't go on sale until next week, but we wanted to give everyone a heads up so they can be on the lookout. We'll announce when DrupalCon DC registration goes live via Twitter, and will let followers get a two-hour head start before we get the word out elsewhere. So, follow us: http://twitter.com/drupalcon.

See you in Washington, DC in March!

I was hoping it would come to Toronto or Ottawa. Washington is too far to bike :P

Yay! I hope to be there and meet everyone! Congrats to the Drupal DC folk!

Yes, I was hoping for a west coast venue as well, but I have family near DC, so should make the trip. I am sure it will break 1000 attendees!

Hi purrin, the good and bad news is that cherry trees won't blossom at the time of DrupalCon :) So: plenty hotel rooms.

Looking forward to meet you at DrupalCon DC.

Indeed, last year they were blossoming toward the end of March and beginning of April.

So there will not be any overlap. How cool it's coming to my town! w00t!

This makes me so happy. Not only is Drupalcon gonna be a short train ride away, but it's going to be happening when my university gets off for spring break o_O <3 <3 <3

What?

Who scheduled this the same weekend Phish is having their reunion in Hampton?

Exactly my thoughts. I was so wanting to go to Drupalcon till I realized it's the weekend of the Phish reunion... DOH!

moshe weitzman’s picture

I am attending the first half of Drupalcon and then train down to Hampton, VA. I won tickets in the lottery. Phish reunion is absolutely the only thing that could draw me away from Drupalcon. I have been to every one of them. I flew to Sunnyvale and back even though my daughter was 3 days old!

You had the Olympics. Aren't you happy? :P :)

..there are Drupal meetups as well as Open Source camps.. If we can get a lot of people together in Beijing we can definitely have a nice strong Drupalcamp.

Maybe one of DrupalCon will have some voting (with 5-6 citys to choose from)?

jredding’s picture

It really would be great to do a voting but Drupalcon takes a lot more than a city. We need a good team and people to help out with logistics. For 2009 we had some really great communities propose some awesome venues and I'm hoping we can do that for 2010 too. If so maybe we can do some community voting.

Now we all that said we are accepting Drupalcon North America 2010 proposals right now as well as Drupalcon Europe 2009 proposals. If you know of a great city and an awesome ground team there that can help out with logistics, etc. let us know!

Quite a handful of LA Drupal members were able to attend and present at DrupalCon Boston 2008, and it'd be cool to see more regional groups help get the word out about DrupalCon.

Definitely. We need all the help with marketing that we can get. Drupalcon Szeged showed that most attendees heard about Drupalcon form the frontpage of Drupal.org. We need to change this so that they hear about Drupalcon from blogs, emails, word-of-mouth, banners ads on other sites, etc.

The D.C team has created some great looking blog badges to help get this word out and those will be posted soon.

Things behind the scenes are churning fast and we're looking to everybody for help in this things. Drupalcon is the Drupal's community conference so it only makes sense that we are the ones the help shape it. If you have ideas let 'em flow.

This is a great occasion. We stay far across the globe but hope to catch the news
as it happens.

(One thing, why the twitter link ? There must be good reasons but it will look so nice
if everything is followed on drupal or a subdomain. Twitter does not use drupal :) to
track its stuffs, let drupal be drupal in all its glory!)

Count me in, I'll be there. Who can guess how many registered attendees it will have?

I'm guessing this one will weigh in just over 1000.

Will the convention site be announced before tickets go on sale?
It would be helpful to those thinking of purchasing tickets "blind" if we can at least get an idea of what part of town it will be in and therefore roughly predict what we may need to spend on accommodations and daily transportation, etc.
Is there a web site yet?
When will you begin to announce keynote speakers and solicit presentations, etc.?

Hi Christopher,

The DrupalCon will be in the convention center in Washington DC's center - you'll probably know it, it's close to many metros, restaurants, hotel, bars.

No worries about buying blind - the ticket prices will be announced together with the DrupalCon DC web site on twitter - at latest, you'd have found out the exact location there :-)

2741 - and 1700 of those won't be Drupal users!!

I expect a lot of people from Associations and Non-Profits!! I work on Association Row(Old Town Alexandria) and I think it would be a good idea for targeted advertisments towards these folks

jredding’s picture

If you work on Association Row help us out by telling your friends, coworkers and others about the event. If you know of any specific places that we should target our advertising please let us know and if you have a bit of time to help on the advertising front, get involved in one of our volunteer teams. Volunteer info will be available on the website shortly but in the interim period feel free to contact me directly and I'll get you in touch with the right folks.

Drupalcon is the Community conference event.

I am thinking that DrupalCon should be advertised on pages like joomla, wordpress, phpBB and so on. No, I am not kidding. I would have nothing against a joomlacon advertised for free on the Drupal.org site..

I am sure, that with a little cooperation everyone wins..

About damn time! Although it Drupalcon being in DC was no big secret. ;-)

socialtalker’s picture

only 125 dollars!?!? and this is considered a cheap price. jeez all of these conferences are for rich folks. what are they serving at these places, diamond caviar?

lyricnz’s picture

By way of comparison, I was supposed to be at a (IBM) WebSphere conference last week - it cost about ~$2000 for four days.

add1sun’s picture

Then you have no idea how much it costs to put on a four-day event for 1000+ people. It is not cheap just to have a roof overhead, coffee to drink and wifi. $125 is a fraction of the real cost per person.

When my group, DCI create our first open source conference- we are going to call it "open source for poor people" and try to keep it at 10 dollars, depending on inflation.

Arnold Leung’s picture

I think it will be hard for you to find a venue and speakers that cost you $1,000 in total for 100 people @ $10/person.

jredding’s picture

We want Drupalcon to be an inclusive event. Unfortunately things aren't free and hosting an event for a 1,000+ people costs quite a bit of money. We do recognize that not everyone can afford the cost of these conferences, especially after you take into consideration costs of travel, and to address that we offer scholarships and we encourage the caviar-eating members of our community to sponsor others. In the past this has actually gone quite well. Details on this will be on the site frontpage when it launches.

Stay tuned for more information and please do not let the cost of a ticket be a deterrent. If you truly can't afford it ask the community around you. I'm sure someone needs a module developed or some additional help on their site.

If you'd like a bit more information on the true costs of an event such as this, Drupalcon Boston's estimated budget is available on the Drupalcon website: http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/drupalcon-budget . The actual budget came in higher than this but roughly in line with this post.
