Menu with Images as Links?

Ok, i want to see if there is a way to make the normal text links menu.module creates and replace them with small images (80x15 pixle pngs ) and have them still act as menus? ive tried BBcode and html tags and it dosnet seem to be parsing (i didnet think it would but worth a shot.) Any ideas short of doing my own HTML menu? I really want to keep the whole menu module intact, just add images insted of links for the top level sites.
custom theming
write a custom theme routine to parse menu items by name and replace with images... That's the 'upgradable' way, so adding new items will not require doing anything at all, they just won't have a graphic.
Or yes, a custom html menu. Except any changes will require new html added.
