Looks way too wide to me; there are a lot of people with 1024 pixel wide screens. Also, the page took nearly 8 seconds to load....

bg now fixed for 1024*
the bg should be preloaded with js. do you have js enabled?

Yes, I have js enabled (I'm doing some site development myself).

Site looks better at the new width, but it still took 8.5 seconds to load...

The quality setting for your image is unneccesarily high; I tried reducing the jpg quality to 50% which reduced the image size from 665kb to 78kb with no discernible degradation of the image... this would vastly improve the page load time.

i reduced the picture quality by 20% with makes almost 40% size-loss with no discernible degradation.
50% looks quite too pixeld - can you please re-check the loading time?

Loading time is now averaging around 2.4 seconds!
