I'm using drupal 6.5 and in my Installation only user with the right 'administer node' can access any content. That doesn'n make sense, all user should at least see a simple page.

Have you given "access content" permission to anonymous?

Of course I did it. I have several drupal 5 sites running, and never had the problem so far.

I have installed Drupal 6.x on several websites - and never came across issue like this.
Maybe you try fresh install of latest released version? (6.6)
Also check you "status report" in admin - if that gives any clue!
