Really? I think this is still a valid idea. My theory is that the core should "just do the right thing" but work in a way that other modules could do other things. Lots of the "general settings" and "punctuation settings" stuff can go in here.

I think #686234: Re-architect alias transformations would actually be a much better direction. Let's make the entire thing do the 'right thing' by default but make all these kinds of things customizable and extendable.
