just like what it says - as opposed to a hack for node.tpl to control the user picture for the content type being used because there may be other nodes of this type that DO want user pictures - they just make zero sense for the slider itself...

Well, it may make zero sense in your particular application, but I don't want to second-guess what people want to display in their slides. Another user has emailed me with an example of how he's implemented the slider, and he DOES have user pictures.

I think it's safer to render everything and let people switch off individual things as they please. You can easily override the CSS in your theme's CSS file or as you say, write a line or two in the node template for the node type.
