Just posted an issue: #323888: Very similar to coherent_access module
This module appears to use CCK's user references to give rights to users. This approach has the advantage of bringing a level of Views integration out of the box.

Just posted an issue into the queue of another module doing very similar things: #324854: Overlaps with coherent_access and userreferrence_access
The ability to populate the view and edit fields of coherent_access via CCK user references would be key.
