Translating Taxonomy Terms in SiteMenu Generated Block

Hi,

Is there a way to translate the taxonomy terms that appear in the SiteMenu generated navigation block using the Locale module?

I tried going to the "Manage strings" section and provided a translation for "term1" and then selected the other language on my site. The translated version of "term1" is not shown in the menu (but does appear translated in the node teaser view).

I also tried setting a translation using the "Translations" tab under the categories management section and the terms do get translated; however, rather than just translating the string, it treats it as a whole different term (i.e. different term id). We want it to just simply translate the term text (and keep the same term id) so that whichever language the user is in, the same nodes are returned and just displayed in the original submitted language.
