I am using imagefield, which requires ImageAPI. Yet I am getting the error message that is in the title. Maybe ImageAPI requires one of those, but I require ImageAPI without one of those, in order for it to work. Is there a way to stop this error from appearing?

Yeah by enabling the GD or ImageMagick toolkit.

But I don't need them. They will just be adding extra unnecessary weight to my system. Or are they required by the imageAPI module, and if so, why aren't they included as dependencies in the installation?

the message is there for a purpose. you need one of them enabled. it's not a dependency because you need one OR the other.
