I have recently had to rewrite the module for Drupal 6 and I believe it can still be found useful to the community. The primary difference of the module from that of search_files is that it is contained to the files uploaded to Drupal. Whereas, search_files searches all files in a directory without regard for any node relationship.

I would like to contribute the new module back to the community as search_attachments as it seems to make the most sense. Would you be willing to either handover the project namespace so that I can maintain a new and supported version of search_attachments, or do you want to maintain the lead position in the search_attachments module and reopen support for my new module?
