Hiya Michelle,
What would happen if instead of using the Content Profile module, you have Advanced Profile Kit 6.x do this:
1. turn profiles into nodes with CCK support
2. turn the custom profile categories into blocks that can be added to panels
3. take over the profile page with a panels page (optional, in case you don't want to use panels)
?
Would that be easier? Because I'm guessing most people would avoid the Content Profile module if they could.

jthomasbailey commentedone more thing... an option to upload a custom css file for your profile page? woo, that would be slick.
michelle#1 is what content profile is for
#2 is what you do with fieldgroups
#3 is the whole point of this module
So, no, I'm not going to write a completely different module. Especially since this module is only going to be around until the panels user module gets written anyway.

jthomasbailey commentedokay, I just thought since there's no Bio equivalent available (and content profile ain't cutting it for me, unless I'm using it wrong) A.P.K. would be the natural starting point for this super user module you guys are planning.
1. content profile is very limiting and confusing for users
2. I want total control over the fieldgroups without using a user-profile.tpl.php
3. panels is cool but there are other options too, like the Custom Page module that could do the same thing without all the weight
I mostly don't know what I'm talking about so I'm going to post a link to this here and let them shoot it down.
