Two instances of server load issues have occurred while editing or adding panels in the Panels UI.
I noticed this directly after I attempted to save changes that were made to the panel region. On both occasions Apache crashed. I also noticed large fluctuations in the server load, at times reaching over 130. This is possibly a loop of some sort.

sdboyer commentedYou'll have to provide considerably more information than "this is possibly a loop of some sort" before I'm inclined to believe that this is something really specific to Panels; thousands upon thousands of people have never reported anything even remotely like this occurring, and I've definitely never seen it myself.
At the very least, I'm not putting time into this unless/until I have apache error, access and referrer logs to substantiate and specify the potential source of the problem. With just the kernel, apache, php and mysql versions, this'd be a wild goose chase.
PS - I respond harshly because I pay attention to 'Category' and 'Priority' in these queues. 'Bug report' means it's something I've done wrong, and 'Critical' means "haul your ass up and do something now!" So it pisses me off when you tell me those two things but can't be bothered to provide a reasonable amount of information for me to get started with.

marcparker commentedI don't have access to the apache logs on my hosts server. I know this may be a shot in the dark, but it happens without fail when I am editing the or adding panel regions. The reason I posted this under the "critical" category was to alert others to this situation. This is a scenario that may well raise the ire of some hosting companies. When I mentioned that there may be a loop, that was only an educated guess. It very well may have nothing to do with Panels per se. I say better safe than sorry here though.
Though I have a background in software engineering I am not highly proficient with the inner workings of Drupal modules. If my post seemed misplaced and vague I do apologize. If you could let me know what other info may be pertinent here I would be more than happy to provide it if possible.
Thank you,
Marc Parker

sdboyer commentedFair enough. And sorry, I was in a crotchity mood this morning.
Given that Panels has thousands of deployments and this is the first I've heard about _anything_ like this happening, I'm going to start by asking - are you running Garland, or some other custom theme when this happens? If it's a custom theme, does the problem go away if you switch to some other theme?

merlinofchaos commentedDo you have a lot of Views? And by a lot I mean hundreds?
marcparker commentedI have 9 views.

marcparker commentedI am using a custom made theme (not one of the themes available under "themes" from drupal.org) . I will switch over to one of the "standard" Drupal themes like Garland and see what the results are.

merlinofchaos commentedPanels 2.x for Drupal 6 is now deprecated and has been removed. All issues against this version of Panels are being closed.
