Does such a thing exist pretty much out of the box? What's my best option? I'm after something that has the same kind of interface, inbox with a list of messages/ avatars etc.

Thanks, privatemsg is not for drupal 6 yet though, unfortunately.

Is pmlite an independent module or does it require others? I'm wary of it as well though as it's only at dev stage, and this site's going live in a few weeks! Might be my best/ only option though?

pmlite is independent.

I use mostly -dev for my live-site, normally it works fine.

You could try to run the Privmesg.module trough http://drupal.org/project/deadwood or look in the issues-folder to see if there is patches for 6.x

HEAD is for 6.x, you could install it on a test-site and see if it works satisfactionally.
