question - I'm using signup module with my group events and saw this...seems similar. are there other functionality this offers not in signup module?

The difference with signup module is that og_event is highly integrated with og and event modules.
It's a lot simplier, it handle one and only one task.

Signup is a lot more generic, and seems to be a lot more complex and complete.
