I am running apache 1.3. And when I get to the setting page to set the Enable clean urls it showed me that you should check the Mod Write function in the .htacccess. anyone who does change things and got clean urls plz share his wisdom .

Set Allow Overide Option to
1. Check in httpd.conf your apache if line
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so or so one
without # in front of line. Is it, then remove #
may be you will need to load the module or recompile apache with some option for this module.
2. Set in httpd.conf
AllowOverride All
It allows to use other configure files for example drupals .htaccess in root of drupal
3. Check .htaccess for line RewriteBase /your_drupal_root_directory and remove # in front of line. It have to done on next lines with "RewriteCond" and "RewriteRule" words too.
4. Restart apache and enable Clean URLs option.
