it would be great if instead of having absolutely every image file (along with its thumbnail and preview versions) in one single folder (sites/default/files/images), that it be possible to upload a folder, foo (sites/default/files/images/import/foo), and that this folder be then the container of the images being imported (sites/default/files/images/foo).

It is possible now to upload a folder, but all the images therein end up in the general image folder.

I agree. At least preveiws and thumpnails should have been in a images/preview and images/thumbnail folder

yes i agree too, i would prever an own folder for any picture gallery, the folder should be namend like the gallery taxonomy. when i want to take a picture with imce to integrated it in another nodetype (artikel) i have to wait minutes until i can choose a picture (out of the gallery folder), and i have only uploaded 25% of all my pictures.
