OK, in my rush to install this great theme I installed it without having the zen theme first. Now I've installed the Zen theme, uninstalled and reinstalled The Morning After, but it doesn't look like the the style sheets ever load. What do I need to do?

Hi,
You shouldn't have to do anything special. It should just work :)
However, that doesn't help with your issue, so let see....
Can you confirm for me which versions of Zen and The Morning After you are using?
Can you copy-paste the html head of a page so I can see what css styles are referenced by the html?
Or if I seems I have misunderstood your question, can you tell me what you saw that makes you think that the "style sheets don't load"?

I'm having this problem as well, though I did install Zen first. The CSS just won't load half the time, and completely random pages at that.
