It would really be great if we could utilize the filter parameter of activity_get_activity() by providing users with a UI that would give them control over what they see in their activity list.

agreed. I do feel that for the d6 version we should consider using Views since Views no longer has a node table requirement to be used.

But a minimal DIY UI should be included for those not opting to use Views.
