If you visit the JED frequently you may have noticed periods of extremely long connect times or occasional outages in the past few weeks.
This is because the site has had a series of denial of service attacks resulting from individuals or groups attempting to create a new extensions site by scraping the JED. These individuals created up to 12,000 simultaneous connections every day, for weeks, in order to gather this information. This action prevented legitimate users from being able to connect and use the JED as they should.
orangu glad you use Drupal? :)

No reason this couldn't
No reason this couldn't happen to the Drupal site.
Denial of service attacks have taken down sites as big as Yahoo! and Amazon.com. We're certainly not protected from the sort of load a large botnet can send our way.
I'm no fan of Joomla, but this thread is absurd.
no fan of Joomla
That is not a very high number of connections per day, not even too high simultaneously with the correct server architecture.
I think we don't hear about similar problems on Drupal.org because the admin is perhaps better.
DOS is a common problem, byut I also think it is grandiose to suspect someone is scraping your content through DOS...
What is ridiculous, that the Joomla site had this problem, that they prominently posted it, or that Drupal.org hasn't?
According to websiteoutlook.com: Drupal.org has a Daily Pageview : 139718 which is an average of 5822 per hour (but of course, the distribution would be higher for business hours in the US and Europe).
Even more interesting, perhaps, Drupal.Org Estimated Worth $308045.4 USD based on potential ad revenue, page rank etc.

12,000 simultaneous
12,000 simultaneous connections means 12,000 all at the same time. That's a botnet.
Sure, some sites can survive 12,000 people hitting all at once. These sites are generally not open source projects funded by donations.
Bash Joomla for its legitimate faults. Their being attacked by malicious people is not a fault.
